About

The Practical Man publishes plain-English do-it-yourself guides for the home, the car, and everything you own.

Not reviews. Not opinion. Just the answer to the thing you're trying to do right now: thaw a frozen AC before you call anyone, patch a wall so the repair disappears, jump a car the right way, mix concrete that actually lasts.

Who writes it

The Practical Man is written and operated by Evan Chartier, a sole proprietor based in Hardwick, Vermont — one person, checking each step before publishing it.

How the guides are written

Every guide follows the same shape, because that's the shape that answers a question:

  • The exact situation you're in, named in the first paragraph.
  • What you can lose if you do it wrong — stated before the steps, not after.
  • The fastest path first, not the most thorough one.
  • The literal name of every part and step.
  • The catch nobody mentions — the part that makes people give up halfway.
  • How to know it worked, so you're not guessing.

What we don't do

We don't run scare headlines. We don't pad a four-step answer into twenty. We don't tell you to call a pro when the job is genuinely one you can do — or pretend a dangerous job is a weekend project when it isn't.

The subscriber program

You can subscribe to be notified by text or email when a new guide goes up. It's free, it takes about thirty seconds, and every channel is a separate, optional choice. You can leave at any time by replying STOP to any message.
